GeoPlan's GIS Mapping

GeoPlan provides a full suite of applications for managing municipal operations. This page describes GeoPlan's integrated GIS mapping capabilities.

Application-Driven Mapping

Mapping is integrated with GeoPlan's application modules and was designed to allow you to move seamlessly from viewing a data record to viewing the mapped feature. Use GeoPlan's application modules to explore your data and navigate to a record of interest, then click Plot on the application menu bar to produce a map that displays that feature as the central focus of the map.

The Features You Need

GeoPlan's integrated GIS capabilities efficiently address your needs. Once you are in map view, you can access a rich set of tools to pan and zoom, query and edit underlying data, change the appearance of map elements, add labels, custom text and graphics, classify data for thematic maps, and produce a subset of records using spatial selection tools.

Need to notify property owners within 300 feet of a proposed zoning variance? Just select the target parcel's data record, click Plot to map that parcel, click Select Buffer to define the 300 foot dimension, and then return from the map view to the application module. Your current recordset automatically includes the parcels selected by the buffer. Two more clicks to specify Mailing Labels from the Reports menu, and your mailing labels will be ready to print. Form letters are just another click away.

GIS by ESRI®

GeoPlan's built-in mapping and GIS capabilities are powered by ESRI's MapObjects®. This means that your ArcView® map data is GeoPlan-ready. For those municipalities that want to augment GeoPlan's integrated mapping with the features provided by ArcView and its extensions, GeoPlan provides a tool button on the main toolbar to invoke ArcView directly. Moreover, GeoPlan's map library lets you specify and store the locations of ArcView projects that contain layouts for frequently-referenced maps. Simply make a selection from the map library and GeoPlan will launch an ArcView session and load the project for you. These features give you the best of both worlds: the ease of application-driven mapping from MapObjects plus full compatibility with and direct access to your ArcView projects.

Spatial Selections
While in map view, you can access GeoPlan's spatial selection options to modify your recordset. You can, for example, apply a buffer to the target feature to select all features within a specified distance. In this example, a 300 foot buffer was applied to the target parcel. GeoPlan delineates the buffer dimensions and shades the parcels comprising the new selection set. When you exit the map and return to data view, you are ready to print mailing labels or form letters for the selected parcels.

Map Layer Properties
A rich set of tools is available for changing the appearance of map elements, adding and manipulating map labels, and producing maps that use data values to determine map shading.

Custom MapGeoPlan helps you design effective maps. Here, parcels were assigned shading based on their zoning districts. Customized text and point graphics were added. Note also the activated Map Tips feature that pops-up the owner name for the parcel on which the mouse pointer rests. You can use Map Tips to display values from any field in any map layer's data table.
